The gastrointestinal (or digestive) system consists of a continuous tract (the GIT) running from the mouth to the anus. Food is taken in at the mouth and as it moves through the system is broken-down into small nutrient molecules. These molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream to be delivered to all parts of the body to fuel metabolism. Undigested material moves through the digestive system and is eliminated as waste. At various stages along the digestive tract enzymes are released which breakdown specific foodstuffs such as proteins, fats and carbohydrates, our nutrient sources.
